I am SO Happy and Excited

I bought books!

I have that I-just-purchased-something high.

Tim's Mother's Day present for me was permission to go on a Powell's bookstore shopping spree.

This afternoon I had my fun.

I'm really pleased with what I ordered.

See, usually I'm a bit lost in searching for Aussie books. I usually just plug Australia into the Powell's search thing, and see what they list. It's usually history, travel, and anthropology stuff. And there's NOTHING wrong with that. But I do so much nonfiction reading for this blog. I've decided when I read books, I want to stick to fiction for the most part.

So, this time I looked at various lists on the Internet. I used Lord Wiki a lot. He has lists of Australian authors and Literature. I found a chick-lit website that has a list of Australian authors, and I also used a great Aussie book review website.

Anyway, here is what I ordered.

1. My Brilliant Career by Miles Franklin. I figure Franklin should be a good author...seeing that they named an important literature award after her. I actually added this book to my wish list when I was researching Gillian Armstrong (will be posting that VERY soon).

2. Blinky Bill by Dorothy Wall. That seems like something I'm required to read...kind of like The Magic Pudding.3. The Whole Woman by Germaine Greer That should be INTERESTING. I'm sure I'll agree with some stuff that she says; and be very annoyed with other stuff she says.

4. The Woman I Am by Helen Reddy. I'm very excited about this one. She seems like my type of woman...all weird and spiritual.

5. Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta. I think this is young adult literature. I don't remember what it's about. The author is the one who wrote Looking For Alibrandi. I have that book, but I haven't read it yet. I have one and half books to finish before I get to that one.

6. Fortunate Life by A B Facey I forgot what this is about, but I think it's a classic. It's important for some reason. I've come across it's name before.

7. Letters From the Inside by John Marsden I THINK this might be that sequel to So Much To Tell You.

8. The Ghost Writer by John Harwood. It's a horror type thing. I think it's won awards.

9. Mr. Darwin's Shooter by Roger McDonald. It's about that Darwin guy.

10. Featherman by Mcmaster, Rhyll

11. A Rake's Vow by Stephanie Laurens. Total trashy romance. I hope it's awesome. I haven't read trashy romance in a long time.

12. Undine by Penni Russon. I've been meaning to read this for a LONG time.

13. Pagan Crusade by Catherine Jinks

14. Obernewtyn Chronicles by Isobelle Carmody. I do wonder if she's related to Kev Carmody.

15. Dancing on Coral by Glenda Adams

16. Taking Shelter by Jessica Anderson

17. Jennifer Government by Max Barry.  Barry and his books look interesting to me.

18. The White Abacus by Broderick, Damien

19. Wyrmhole by Jay Caselberg

20. For the Term of His Natural Life by Marcus Clarke. Another classic. Really. My definition of classic is any book I've heard of before consulting a literature list.

21. Dislocations by Janette Turner Hospital. It's a collection of short stories.

22. Dream Stuff by David Malouf I've never heard of the book, but I've heard of the author.

23. Antipodes by David Malouf

24. Pants on Fire by Maggie Alderson. Chick-lit. I love chick-lit.

25. You Had Me at Halo by Amanda Ashby. Metaphysical chick-lit. I love metaphysical chick-lit.

26. Me Myself I by Pip Karmel. This book was made into a movie with Rachel Griffiths. I saw part of it.

27. Coldwater by Mardi Mcconnochie,

28. Upside Down Inside Out by Monica Mcinerney I love her books, especially The Faraday Girls.

29. Dream Rider
by Barry Jonsberg It's about lucid dreams!

30. Evil Genius by Catherine Jinks I almost didn't buy this book. I can't tell if it's something I'll like or not. I'm a little weary. Who knows though....I might end up loving it.

31. Misery Guts by Morris Gleitzman.

32. True Story of Lilli Stubeck by Aldridge, Jame

33. Cool For Cats by Jessica Adam. Chick-lit again.

34. I'm a Believer by Jessica Adams

35. Spinning Around by Catherine Jinks. I bought 3 of her books. I hope I like her stuff.

In other news....

I watched this video this afternoon. It's a recap of Australian history....pretty entertaining.

And then there's this video. It seemed fairly okay until I got to 2:40. I can't tell if this guy made a mistake, is a revisionist, or the whole thing is a joke. The title of the video makes me think it MIGHT be satire. I don't know.

What would our world be like if we
knew for sure there
was life after death, and
we could easily talk to our
dearly-departed on the Internet?

The Dead are Online a novel by Dina Roberts

  1. I hope you'll like Dislocations. I know I did!

Can you believe I also wrote an encyclopedia article on My Brilliant Career? ;-)

  2. I liked the movie of My Brilliant Career, I better check Amy's writing.

I had heard and read of a few of the books. Recommend A Fortunate Life. I am not up with more recent stuff.

Cute guy in the video but what nonsense. I got to 3.46 before I stopped it. I am going to pursue him.

  3. Amy: Hi! I'm sure I'll like it. I'd love to read your article! Can I? Do you have that one online? I guess I should wait until I read the book first. Although I know a lot about the story--read about it while doing the post on Gillian Armstrong.

Andrew: I stopped watching the video too. I want to watch the rest and see if there's anything else crazy. I agree about him being cute. The only thing that makes me think he's joking is the title is "Nice History...." But if it's fake, he's a really good actor. He seems so sincere.

  4. re the video: It is Adam Hills. he is a comedian. it is SATIRE.
    Like BORAT and BRUNO ?
the outraged comments after it have been made by idiots (or by more satirists).

    Congratulations on your amazing gift.

Max Barry has a blog - I know I have been to it; and Stephanie Laurens (?) might have one too.

I hope you get plenty of spare time for the reading.

  5. it's the NICE History - the bad bits left out.

Like a history of America not mentioning slaves or Custer.

he has a blog, and is in Canada now.

  6. Marshall-Stacks,

I can see why you might have thought it was Adam Hills. His video is a RESPONSE to Hills.

I want to believe it's a joke. He just seems SO sincere.

Okay...I'm watching more of the show. It HAS to be a joke.

He puts Brisbane in the west and Perth in the east. Then he says the population of Australia is 2 million.

It has to be a joke...

Most people live in the center of Australia?

  9. Holy crap, I can't believe how many books you bought. You're an ambitious reader! You go girl.

  10. Andrew: You weren't that guy putting all the comments near his movie...were you????????

Laura: I've been really good at reading and finishing books the last two weeks. I can do it if I really put my mind to it and make it a priority. Before though, I was horrible. It took me over a month to finish a book. And the sad thing is I LOVED the book. I just never made time to read it.

I'm a faster reader...if I actually manage to open the book and look
    at it ; )
