Our Pretend Australia Trip Day 11 Canberra

Good morning!

I'm very happy and excited because we found a wonderful place to go.

It's a parrot thing!!!

I love parrots.

We're going to go to the Canberra Walk in Aviary.   We get to feed the parrots!  That's one of my favorite things to do.

We have an aviary in Fort Worth where you can feed parakeets and cockatiels; but this Canberra one has even more kinds of parrots.

I think I will be in heaven today.

I hope it's not too hot, though.

And I hope Jack doesn't get scared of the birds and want to leave too soon.

Well, I think it will probably be okay because we're going there in the morning.   We're leaving just as soon as Tim gets out of the toilet.  We should hopefully be there at their opening time (10:00).   I'm pretty sure it won't be hot yet.

We've all eaten a breakfast bar.

We'll probably eat again after the aviary.

* * *

We fed the parrots.

It was wonderful!!!!

Jack did get nervous in the beginning.  He didn't want to hold the food.  But after awhile his bravery kicked in.  Then he totally loved it.

It was so fun.

I loved feeding the birds.

And the three of us connected very well.

Sometimes I feel Tim is with us physically, but not in spirit.  He's often busy on one of his little devices.

Other times I feel like I'm the one not really there.  I'm bored and keeping myself busy with a book or something.

Then there are times where I'm listening to Tim rant about something...usually politics.  Jack's not listening.  He's in his own little world.

At the bird thing, I felt like we were such a fabulous threesome.

Oh and guess what.  I had a parrot land on my hand. It wasn't a Sulfur-Crested Cockatoo this time.   It was a Rainbow Lorikeet.

It was a wonderful moment for me.

I kind of wish we were staying another day. But I'm guessing (and hoping) there will be more bird adventures later in our Australia adventures.

Anyway...

After we fed the birds, we went to feed ourselves. We were all pretty hungry.

We ate at a place called Cafe Injoy.

It was very crowded and the food portions were too huge. But we liked it. Tim and Jack shared a breakfast platter. I got some toast and fruit.

It's a really cool place.   Jack would have loved it when he was younger because there are playgrounds there.   He LOVED playgrounds a few years ago.  Now he's much less interested.

He did like feeding the fish in the little ponds there.  We all had fun with that.

After lunch, we walked around the area.

We went into the Aarwun Art Gallery.  They have a nice collection of Australian art. We didn't stay long though, because none of us are really that much into art.

They had a painting by Albert Namitjera.  It was kind of thrilling for me to see that.

They also had stuff by Rolf Harris and Pro Hart.

Jack was surprised to see Rolf Harris' name.  He knows him as a singer, not an artist.

After that we spent a few minutes in an Aboriginal art gallery.

AND then....

We went to a reptile Sanctuary.   Here we weren't as much of a fantastic threesome as we were at the parrot place.  Tim was a bit distracted.  He played a game on his phone most of the time.  He's not a big reptile fan.   I should have encouraged him to stay behind.  It would have saved us $10. I'm not a big believer in people paying to see attractions that don't interest them.

Well, now we're back at the hotel.  We're resting a bit.   Then we'll go eat dinner. Jack wants his meat pizza he insists we promised him.   I argued that technically it wasn't a promise. I'm pretty sure it had just been a "maybe".

But Tim and I are both okay with pizza. So we'll probably do that.

* * *

We're back.  We had dinner at Zeffirelli Pizza.

We actually drove to Dickson, because it's so hot outside.  Also we heard it might storm. We didn't want to get stranded in bad weather.

After dinner we went back to the supermarket to buy more breakfast bars.  We ran out this morning.

This time we bought blueberry bars

We also got some bottled water, some fruit roll cookie things (looks like Fig Newtons), and a Cadbury Rocky Road bar. We're going to eat some of the chocolate for our dessert tonight.    Hopefully we won't eat all of it.

But I won't make any promises.

NOTE:  This trip journal is fictional.   We are not really in Australia.  Some stuff in these posts are based on research.  Some stuff is based on my reality.  Some stuff is based on past experiences. And some stuff is based on fantasy.

The non-trip journal posts ARE true and real…except for my dreams (which are written in purple).

Oh...and also....my 2009 trip reports are about a real trip to Australia.  That's all true too.

  1. Great flocks of birds make me nervous. When there are lots of people and great hopes of food birds can become a little excited, or stressed or both.
Did you remember to wear washable hats? If you didn't need them it will be because you wore them. If you neither wore nor needed washable hats this is a sign of good luck. It doesn't mean you will have good luck, it means you had good luck.

  2. Washable hats?

    Now you tell me!

We didn't have the hats; but maybe I'll buy some for next time.

Although then I might end up feeling we need to wear them all the time. What if a free bird poops on our head?

I guess it would be good to wear hats all the time, just for the sun protection.

Anyway, I guess on the bright side...we DID have good luck ; )
