More Stuff....

Guy Pearce

Guy Pearce=the guy I used to confuse with Hugo Weaving.

Now I know about Hugo Weaving, so I'm less confused.

All I know about Guy Pearce is that he was in Memento and The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

I guess I shall go and learn more.

Lord Wiki says baby Guy was born on 5 October 1967. He's a few months younger than Tim. He's about seven years younger than Hugo Weaving.

Pearce would be a Libra. The birthday website says he's an 11 in numerology. Cool. That's one of the MASTER numbers. What that means pretty much is....Pearce has the potential to be extraordinarily awesome. Honestly though, there's a lot of extraordinarily awesome people who do not have the master numbers.

Pearce shares a birthday with Kate Winslet. I like her. I think most people do. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say bad things about Winslet.

Baby Guy was born in England. His mom was a school teacher who specialized in needlework and home economics. I did horrible in that class! Daddy Pearce was originally a Kiwi. Sadly, he died when Guy was nine. Pearce has something in common with Blanchett then. They both lost their fathers when they were young.

The Pearce family moved to Geelong Australia when Pearce was three. Mommy Pearce ran a deer farm. I didn't know there was a such thing. What do you farm deer for? Well, I guess you could sell Venison. But I thought deer were usually hunted.

The school Pearce went to was Geelong College. He did some theater there.

I'm going to skip the career stuff. I'll look at that via IMDb.

As for the personal life of Pearce.....

He's been married since 1997 to a psychologist. He's atheist.

That's about it.

I'll now go to IMDb.

His first TV/movie role was in Neighbours. Pearce played Mike Young in sixty-four episodes. He was on the show for about three years.

Here's a scene. Pearce plays hero to a little girl's dog. Unfortunately, the clip ended before I could find out what happened to the dog.

In 1990, Pearce was in a movie called Friday on My Mind. I guess this was his first role outside of Neighbours.

The guy who wrote that movie also wrote the next movie Pearson was in. This was called Heaven Tonight. It's about music people.

Here's a scene from the movie. Pearce sings in it.

Pearce kept doing movies written by this same guy.  Frank Howson. The third movie they worked on together was Hunting. One of the stars is an American actor.  John Savage. I thought that was the name of the actor in Nightmare on Elm Street, but I don't see the movie on his filmography. Who was the man in Nightmare on Elm Street then?

Ah. John Saxon, not John Savage. Oops.

In the early 90's, Pearce did some episodes of Home and Away. He appeared on a few other TV shows during this time.

I guess 1994 was Pearce's big break. This was when he was starred in The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Weaving was nominated for a best actor AFI award. Pearce was not. I wonder if there was any jealousy there. I'd be jealous if it happened to me. I have to admit that. But I would remind myself that I'm lucky enough to be in a movie.

Here's a short scene featuring Pearce.

After Priscilla, Pearce was in the TV show based on Banjo Paterson's poem. Snowy River: The McGregor Saga.

Who else was on this show? Was it Hugh Jackman? Yeah. Okay. It was. I'm glad I remembered that correctly. Jackman was only in five episodes. Pearce was in all sixty-five episodes. I guess we can say he was one of the stars.

Here's a clip from the show. I hope Pearce is shown in this.

Crap. I didn't see him. There was sure a lot of Hugh Jackman though. Duncan tries to show he CAN do the whole farm life thing; just like Tess did on McLeod's Daughters.

I'm having trouble finding scenes with Pearce...strange since he was in more episodes than Jackman.

Oh well.

In 1996, Pearce was in a romantic-comedy called Dating the Enemy. Ah! It's one of those body switching movies. Pearce plays a guy who wakes up in his girlfriend's body.

Here's a scene from the movie.

Is it really that hard to put on a bra?

I'm skipping a couple of TV movies Pearson did in the mid nineties.

In 1997, he played Errol Flynn. This was another film directed by Frank Howson. And John Savage, from Pearce's past movie with Howson, was in it as well.

Also that year, Pearce did his first American movie. This was L.A Confidential. The movie is about police officers in old Hollywood.

The trivia page says studio executives were unhappy with having nonAmericans in American period pieces. I guess their unhappinesses was ignored.

After the movie was done filming (or so Pearce thought), he went and got his head shaved. He didn't realize that they did pick-up shots. He had to wear a wig. He said that in Australia they don't do pick-up shots like that.

Here's a trailer for the movie. It looks pretty good. Pearce seems to be a good actor.

In 1999, Pearce was in another American movie. This was A Slipping-Down Life. It's about a shy woman who stalks a small-town rock star. Guy Pearce is the rock star.

Here's the trailer.

Well, I'm glad the stalker thing worked out for that woman. I guess the moral of that story is sometimes you CAN win love by doing gruesome things. That's nice to know.

Seriously though. Sometimes the only difference between a stalker and a very romantic person is whether or not there's mutual attraction. Once when I was in college, this guy left me a bunch of messages on my answering machine. We had just met. I thought it was creepy and weird. See, but I had no interest in him. If I had been interested, I might not have minded so much. Although in my case, I might have. I can be scared off fairly easily. I don't like to feel crowded. With other people though, persistence works on them.

There's that movie Waitress with Keri Russell. In it, a woman is courted by an annoying and persistent man. He eventually wins her over (at least for a while. I didn't see the end of the movie). He would have completely failed to win me over. I find it hard to tolerate pushy people.

Oh! Awesome! Pearce was in a movie about cannibalism! Cannibalism is one of my favorite topics.

How did I miss this movie? It's called Ravenous. Even the title sounds really cool.

It seems the movie involves the Wendigo mythology. Phoebe turned into that on Charmed once. Wait...or was it Piper?

Okay....

It was Piper.

Robert Carlyle is in Ravenous. His name sounds familiar. Who is he?

Well, I think the only thing I've seen with him is The Beach.

David Arquette is in the movie too. I like him. Oh! There's going to be a Scream 4. Really? Wow. I had no idea. I like the scream movies. When did the last one come out? 2000. Yikes. It's been awhile.

The trivia page says Pearce is vegetarian. But he ate meat for the film...spitting it out after he chewed and the director yelled cut. I'm not sure if that does anything in terms of saving an animal. I think the only thing it does is save calories.

Here's the trailer for the film.

The dad from Beetlejuice is in it as well.

In 2000, Pearce was in William Friedkin's Rules of Engagement. Friedkin is the guy who directed The Exorcist.

Rules of Engagement in a war movie. I think it involves court and law as well. Maybe it's like A Few Good Men?

The tagline of the movie is A hero should never have to stand alone. I like that. I agree with it.

Apparently, there's also a documentary about Waco called Rules of Engagement.

And there was a TV sitcom with the same name as well.

I saw Memento. I liked it. I had no memory what it was about, though until I just saw the plot description. It's about short-term memory loss. It's like 50 First Dates, but instead of being romantic, it's a mystery thing.

Carrie-Ann Moss from The Matrix is in it. Now that could further my confusion between Pearce and Weaving. They both were in the Priscilla movie, and they both were in a movie with Carrie-Ann Moss.

Other actors were considered for Peace's part....Brad Pitt, Alec Baldwin, and Aaron Eckhart.

The guy who directed this movie was Christopher Nolan. He's the one who brought us The Dark Knight. I didn't know that.

Memento won Nolan an AFI award for best screenwriter. Pearce was nominated for a Saturn award, but he didn't win. He did however win a Las Vegas Film Critics Society Award. Their current favorite actor is Frank Langella in Frost/Nixon.

Here's the Memento Trailer. What if his character dated Drew Barrymore's character? That would be quite difficult, I bet.

In 2002, Pearce was in The Time Machine. I have VERY vague memories of this. No, I didn't see it. But I kind of remember hearing about it. I'm talking about the movie. Of course I've heard of the book!

The trivia page has a cool fact. The director of the movie is the great grandson of H.G Wells. For any of you who are even more culturally illiterate than me, Wells is the guy who wrote The Time Machine. It's a classic novel. What else did Wells write? I think he's famous for something else.

Oh! He did LOTS of stuff. The ones that are most familar to me are War of the Worlds and The Island of Dr. Moreau. Orson Wells did the radio program based on War of the World. Is he related to H.G Wells also?

Well, no...probably not. Wells actually spells his names Welles. Oops.

Pearce broke a rib when filming the movie. He did most of his own stunts.

Here's a scene from the movie. I like Pearson's character...at least from what I've seen so far.

In 2002, Pearce did an Australian movie. The Hard Word. It was a crime drama. Rachel Griffiths was in it too. It doesn't look like something I'd like.

He did another Australian movie that year. Till Human Voices Wake Us Up. This also starred Helena Bonham Carter.

A man returns to his hometown in Victoria. He encounters a woman who reminds him of the woman he lost in a lake accident. It sounds a bit spooky. I might like something like that.

Here's the trailer.

I think I'd LOVE that movie. Although I think I can guess the big mystery. My guess is Carter's character does not exist in the real world. I think Pearce is encountering her in his dreams. I think the whole movie is about dreams, and I love dreams so.....

And the title fits. That's so cool.

Pearce was in a French movie about tigers. I vaguely remember a tiger cub movie, or maybe I'm thinking of lion cubs.

In 2005, Pearce was in a movie written by Nick Cave. This was The Proposition. I didn't realize Nick Cave wrote movies. The plot of the movie sounds a bit like Sophie's Choice. A man has to choose between the death of his older brother and younger brother. If he picks the older brother, he has to do the killing himself. Shit. That's tough.

Nick Cave took three weeks to write the screenplay. That's about how long it would take me to write my screenplays. I'd take about 3-5 weeks.

Guy Pearce was nominated for an AFI award.

Here's the trailer for the film.

I might have seen parts of this movie on TV.

In 2006, Pearce was in First Snow. I think this was on TV a few weeks ago. I watched a little bit of it. I forgot it was Pearce in it. But that might explain why I stopped to watch some of it.

The movie is about a guy who gets an ominous psychic reading. From what I've read, ethical psychics are not supposed to do that. They're not supposed to tell you something bad is going to happen, or give you depressing news. They might warn you if there's a way to stop the bad thing from happening. Get your heart checked out. Don't drive on a bridge this weekend. But they shouldn't tell you scary stuff that you can't change. What would be the point?

Here's the trailer for the movie. It looks pretty good.

In Factory Girl, Pearce played Andy Warhol. Here's the trailer. Hayden Christenson is in the movie too. I like him.

I'm finding myself more and more attracted to young actors. Is that disturbing? Well, at least they're of the legal age. If I wasn't already married to Tim, I might be following in Demi Moore's footsteps.

I like Christenson, Radcliffe, and the Twilight Guy....others too, probably.

Pearce was in Death Defying Acts. I just wrote about that movie a few weeks ago. How did I forget Pearce was in it? Maybe I have short-term memory as well. Maybe I need to tattoo all this information on my body. I could put the Prime Ministers down my arms. Maybe I'd put all the actors on my ass. No that wouldn't be good. I can't see my butt unless I look in a mirror. What if there's no mirror available?

In 2008, Pearce was in Traitor. Is this the movie Tim rented and brought to the lake house? I think this might be it. That (lake house) movie starred Don Cheadle and involved the Middle East. This Traitor movie does too. I should just look under Cheadle's name.

Yeah. I think it's the same movie. I didn't watch the whole movie. I got bored, and walked out. I really don't like serious political movies. I like FUN happy movies...or supernatural stuff. I think my favorite is comedy-dramas....you know like The Nanny Diaries and The Holiday.

Pearce was in Bedtime Stories with Adam Sandler. This sounds a little familiar to me. The funny thing is Sandler was in a movie with Don Cheadle. It actually was a bit serious and political, but I still liked it. Did any of you see it? Reign Over Me. It's about a man who lost his wife and children on 9/11. It's very sad, but beautiful.

Bedtime Stories is a family fantasy type thing. Jonathan Pryce is in it. He's the scary guy in Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Here's the trailer for Bedtime Stories.

I'm not sure where Guy Pearce is in that, but I do like the idea of gumball rain.

In Her Skin came out in 2009. That sounds familiar, but I think I was thinking of In Her Shoes. This movie is Australian, and sounds really depressing. It's about a missing teenager.

I guess that's the last movie Pearce has been seen in. He has a bunch of upcoming stuff. One is coming out in October. This is The Road. It's post-apocalyptic. Charlize Theron is in it. It involves Cannibalism. Hey. If you're hungry and there's nothing left to eat.....

Is it supposed to be a remake of The Road Warrior? The preview says it's based on a novel written by the same guy who wrote No Country For Old Men. So, no. I guess it's not a remake.

Pearce has seven other movies coming out in the next few years. One is a horror movie with Katie Holmes.

I'm going to read the Pearce trivia page on IMDb.

His father died in a plane crash. That's scary and sad.

Pearce has an older sister named Tracey.

From an early age, Pearce preferred art and music over math and science.

In his teens, Pearce got into body building. He won the Mr. Junior Victoria competition.

Pearce was a few days out of high school when he started working on Neighbours.

He's into music. He sings and plays instruments. He has written a lot of songs. Some of them were featured in the movie Hunting.

There's a scene in LA Confidential where Pearce forgets to do an American accent. He reverts back to his Australian accent. Oops.

IMDb also has some quotes from Pearce. I like this one. You meet these people who are confident all the time. They annoy me. And I wonder if it's because I'm envious or if it's because they're shallow.

I know people like that. They annoy me sometimes too. I don't think they're shallow. I think they're actually insecure. They APPEAR confident because they're afraid to be seen as weak.

I love this quote too. I always look at films as real stories with real people in real situations. That's why I struggle with the whole notion of calling someone the 'good guy' or the 'bad guy,' because I think we all have potential to do good things and all have the potential to do bad things.

I strongly agree with that. We demonize others to make ourselves seem good. And yeah. Some people are definitely worse than others. We're not all Hitler. We don't all drown our babies in the bathtub. But when we put too much emphasis on evil individuals, we are likely to ignore our own badness.

The Holocaust wasn't caused by one big bad guy. It was caused by a LONG history of anti-semitism. It was caused by xenophobia and those that find pleasure in hurting others. It was caused by apathetic bystanders.

Then there's the dual nature of people. The Nazi who tortured Jews might have been a loving husband and father in his family. The man who risked his life to save Jews might have been a husband who neglected his children and beat his wife.

Life is complicated.

Pearce doesn't like musical music too much. Well, that's something we don't have in common. I love musical music!

Andrew Denton did interview Guy Pearce. It's interesting that he talked to him and not Hugo Weaving. Maybe he did talk to Weaving, and I just couldn't find it.

Anyway, the Pearce interview was done in 2003. For some reason, I almost wrote 1964. I have no idea why.

He says Priscella was popular in America.

Pearce says they did research for their roles by jumping into the drag queen scene in Sydney.

He talks about Neighbours...how certain stars became very famous. Pearce jokes that the blonder you are, on the show, the more famous you get.

Denton asks about the effect his dad's death had on him. Pearce says he was left with a sense of responsibility. He feels responsible for other people's happiness. I'm trying to think whether I feel like this. I don't think so. I don't feel like I need to make everyone happy. I do have a problem with feeling like I'm responsible for preventing people from being sad, though.

I'm not going to go into details right now. But I have made choices that made me unhappy simply because I was afraid of someone else being sad. That's not necessarily a bad thing, I suppose. If you constantly do the opposite, then it's very selfish. And I know there are times where I DO put my happiness first. The problem is...when I do this, I often end up feeling guilty. So I'm not happy anyway. I might as well let the other person be happy instead. Then I get to feel like the martyr. Don't you get gold stars for that, or something?

No, I'm not truly a martyr. I get my way in a lot of things...like going to Australia. Tim and Jack were awesome with this....always very supportive. They let me follow my dream of VISITING.

As for moving there......

That's a different story.

I think some people see my blog and think I'm weak. Okay. If you want to become Australian, why don't you just do it? Stop wishing and GO for it.

But there are other factors besides myself. At times, Jack has been VERY much against it. He's now open to living there in the far future. Supposedly, my future grandchildren are all going to be Australian. But as for going anytime soon....I think he'd be a bit unhappy. If something fell on our lap, I'd work to convince him things would be great. I'd probably do some major bribing. However, I don't feel right pursuing my dream when I know it might hurt him. So....I'm kind of leaving it all up to fate.

Oh....total tangent there.

Back to Denton and Pearce.

Pearce's sister is intellectually handicapped.

He seems to love her a lot. She brings light into his life. He brings light into hers.

When they were children, he saw his sister being bullied. People would throw rocks at her. This experience helped Pearson to grow up defending the underdog.

He sounds like a nice guy. Denton agrees with me. He ends the interview saying It's nice to meet a good soul.

Here's another interview.

They say that while he was in Neighbours, Pearce was a teen idol. It's nice that he veered away from that with the Priscilla movie. He chooses offbeat roles rather than sexy ones. I like actors who do this. My favorite Brad Pitt movie is Twelve Monkeys. I like him much more as a crazy guy than a hot sexy guy. .

The article says, Pearce dislikes the spotlight because he wants his characters to be accepted at face value, uncolored by assumptions based on roles he has played before. I usually have little interest in seeing movies that feature tabloid stars. If I see a movie with Tom Cruise, I'm not going to be thinking about his character. I'm going to be thinking about Scientology. If I see a movie with Jennifer Aniston, I'm going to think about her mess with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. I like actors. I think I have a lot in common with them (relationship problems, vegetarian choices, spiritual stuff, accent confusion, eating disorders, low self-esteem, etc). I'm not a big fan of the tabloid stars. I guess maybe some of them are there not by choice. But I do think some of them CHOOSE to be there, and want to be there...despite their protests.

Pearce doesn't like doing interviews, especially while working on a film. He feels it interferes with the process.

Despite his dislike of interviews, the interviewer says that Pearce was very forthcoming. He seems to be a people pleaser. This goes well with what was said in the Denton interview.

The interviewer says Pearce has a self-deprecating sense of humor. I like that.

I think Pearson is the type of person I'd like.

Okay. All that was just the introduction to the interview. Now I'm going to read the actual interview.

He says that doing Australian movies is more cathartic to him. To work in America or other places is more about curiosity, because I'm dealing with cultures and sensibilities that I don't really know. So I'm having to sort of investigate them, which I'm fascinated in, but as I said, it comes from a place of curiosity rather than a real need to get something out of my system.

Really? Are we THAT different? I mean I know there are some cultural differences. I don't deny that. But from my experience, Australians and Americans are a lot a like. When I'm with my Australian friends, they seem pretty much like me....I mean as much as anyone is like me. They don't seem incredibly foreign. The language is definitely different. They say their food is nice. I say my food is good.

As a whole, Americans emphasize winning and success more than Australians....but in terms of individuals.....

I don't know.

Maybe Australian film people and American film people are very different. It seems I see a lot of Australian actors complaining about Hollywood. Maybe American film people are incredibly awful. I could believe that.

Pearce says he's a bit mobbed when he goes to England. Yeah. I forgot. Neighbours is very big there.

He's asked about doing accents. He says he's good with the British one since his family is British. And as for the American accent....But because in Australia we're so inundated with American culture, television, this that and the other, everyone in Australia can do an American accent. It's just second nature.

I'm totally inundated with Australian culture. That might explain why the accent pops out of my mouth. I can do it only accidentally though. I'd like to be able to learn to do accents on command. That would be cool. I could show off at parties and everything.

See, at home I'll speak with an Australian accent a lot of the time. I'll do this especially on a day where I watch a lot of Australian videos. But if someone asks me to DO an Australian accent, I'll sit there with a blank look on my face. If I say anything, it will sound awful.

I'd love to be able to do an Irish accent too. I should work on that.

In the interview, he's asked if he's going to do Batman with Christopher Nolan. I guess this interview was done before that all came out. Pearson replies that he hasn't been asked. I wish he had been. I think I'd prefer him to Christian Bale. I'm not a big fan of Christian Bale as Batman.

Pearce and his wife were childhood sweethearts. They had something going on when they were twelve. That's sweet. I often play around with Jack about him marrying his friends. It's fun to imagine that it could happen. But recently I was more realistic with him. I told him most people don't marry the friends they had as children. I told him he's more likely marry someone he meets in college or later.

I wonder though....have there been people who married their childhood friends? Pearson married his preteen friend, but what about younger than even that? Has anyone married their friend from preschool?

Pearce dispels the myth of all the Australian actors in Hollywood being best friends with each other. I'm trying to think of whether I pictured that. I don't think I did. I expect some of them know each other, but I didn't think they all know each other. I definitely didn't imagine them all being close friends.

Here's an interview about A Slipping Down Life. The movie took five years to get released. Shit. That's a long time. Pearce blames the producer of the movie. He doesn't seem too pleased with her. Actually, he sounds very angry. He even wrote her a nasty letter. Yikes.

Here's another interview about that movie.

Pearce says he's never had an experience with a crazy fan like his character does in the movie. He has dealt with loud and obnoxious fans though.

I don't know. I sense some of the false modesty that I sensed in Blanchett. There's this idea of I don't want to be a star. I just like acting. And that MAY be true, but I don't fully believe it.

Pearce is asked if he'd be just as happy doing regional theater. He replies, The beauty of working in a bigger arena is that you generally work with exceptionally talented people. That's not to suggest that there aren't exceptionally talented people in regional theater, but on a whole, it's very exciting to work in a professional arena where the standard can be higher.

I think that's kind of bullshit. First of all, not all great talent gets discovered by the big shots. Second, a lot of big stars started working in regional theater. So we know there's some amazing talent in local theater.

I think some actors think too highly of themselves. The world centers around them. How dare you try to feed me brown M and M's. You know I HATE those! But I think other actors work too hard to present themselves as not desiring celebrity.

I think if Pearce truly cared only about the acting and not the celebrity part, he WOULD go off and just do regional theater.

Of course there's another factor....money.

This website talks about Pearce's atheism. He says he wore a t-shirt in America that said Jesus Saves. The s in Jesus was a dollar sign. People approached him and said he couldn't wear it. That's not fair. How many shirts have I seen that annoyed me? How many people wear t-shirts with Bible quotes?

I had a dream related to this last night. One of the groomsmen at my sister's wedding plans to hire Tim for a job. The catch is he insists that he be able to molest Tim's wife. He wants to touch my breasts. I decide it really is no big deal. I didn't care. We go into a closed room together. He touches me. It doesn't phase me much. But then he starts talking to me about the New Testament. He startes preaching to me. And THIS annoys me. I argue with him. I say there's no proof the Bible is real. I can sit there and say Little Red Riding Hood is real. Maybe the Wolf is God.

When I woke up, I thought about how we have laws against sexual harassment. Well, what about religious harassment? Now I don't mind people praying in front of me. I don't mind them saying Merry Christmas. I don't care that much if they wear shirts with Bible Quotes...as long as they don't protest an atheist t-shirt. I do mind when people PUSH their beliefs on me. I mind when someone tells me that my spiritual experiences come from Satan. I mind when people yell about hell while I'm waiting at a bus stop.

I do believe in free speech though. I don't really know the legalities of sexual and religious harassment. What can get you in trouble for in America and Australia. How strict are the laws? Could you get in trouble for telling a coworker they look sexy in a skirt? What if you told them they need to believe in Jesus to get to heaven? Personally, the latter would make me feel much more uncomfortable.

Oh cool. According to this website, there ARE laws to prevent people from religious harassment in the workplace. I'm glad to know that. And I'm glad to have had that dream. Dreams can make us think about stuff we'd otherwise not think about. I do wonder why I dreamed about my Brother-in-law's friend. That's awfully random. Oh well.

Back to Pearce. He doesn't believe in God, but he does believe we're all connected. Is that in a spiritual way? If so, he sounds like me. I don't believe in a god, but I do believe in a spiritual world. I do believe we're all connected.

Well, I better quit. I've rambled on enough. Jack wants some attention.

So....see you guys later.

  1. A thoroughly nice and decent bloke. For a straight guy to play his role in Priscilla was just amazing. He was first class.

  2. Andrew,

Yeah. Well, I'm sure a lot of gay people do a superb job playing straight people as well.

  6. Anonymous,

Your comment is incredibly sweet and it means so much to me!

I actually have gotten back to posting more.

I don't know if I want to go back to doing it on a daily basis; but I've quit my whole blogging-retirement thing.

  7. Good to have a blog to express your thoughts and share your interests with others.
Do you know of a TV show called "Australia Junior MasterChef"? I love Australia more after watching it. Seem the Aussie kids are so well-educated and have good-mannered.

  8. June,

    Hi!

I've heard of the show, but haven't seen it. Is it on in your country? What country are you in? Or do you watch it on the internet?

There's a wide variety of Aussie kids. Some of them are well-educated and good mannered!

  9. I'm from Hong Kong. Local TV is now showing season 2 of Junior Master Chef Australia. Last summer when this show was first boardcast in HK, there were many good reviews and people were amazed by the talent of those kids. And most importantly, the kids though in a competition, were very supportive to each other. And there were debate/discussion of how HK kids are too over-protected and they can't even handle the small daily issue.

If kids all around the world can act like those in the shows, the future would be very promising.

  10. June,

It's really good that the kids are cooperative with each other.

Does the show push for them to be competitive? Or do they seem to want cooperation between the kids?

We're overprotective of kids in America too. I'm not sure it's that different in Australia. It could just be that the kids picked for the Junior Chef show are extra-special.

Maybe that's why they get on the show. ??

How many kids are chosen for each season?

  11. Hi Dina,

    See the description here
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junior_MasterChef_Australia

It's really refreshing from those adult reality show cos' the kids are all so friendly to each other. And the parents and judges are so encouraging. No gossip, back-stabbing...Of course it's a TV show so many things are scripted but the positive energy is really very touching to the audience.

  12. Oops I mean MAYBE there are things scripted in the show. Those kids are so smart they cook like professional chef! U'know after watching it, I am very interested to know what the educational system in Australia is. Perhaps most Aussie parents spend lots of money to have their kids going to cooking classes! But what I like is the kids are enjoying what they're doing and they certainly know what they're doing (not forced by others) and they support and encouage each other. That's precious to see nowadays.

  13. June,

I think some of credit has to go to the show itself. It's nice to hear that there's a reality show that encourages kindness and cooperation rather than sensationalizing rejection and competition.

There was a very positive singing competition show in America. Unfortunately, it was canceled.

Good question about Aussie kids and cooking classes. Do you think it's common there?

  14. Dina,

What was the singing show that got cancelled? We only show America's Idol here.

I guess there is cooking lesson in school but to be able to cook like a professional, they must have take courses at some special cooking school or maybe their parents are all professional chef! Seem the trend in most countries now is to have the children learning all kind of things and hope they can achieve as much as they can quickly. That's sad if the kids are forced to do that.

I've never been to Australia and very much want to go there this year.

  15. June,

I hope you're able to get to Australia soon!

Yes, I'm guessing Aussie kids take cooking classes.

Do they have classes for kids in Hong Kong...I mean besides regular school.

The singing show was called "The Sing Off".

  16. There are cooking classes for moms and kids together in HK, but they are just like summer interest class, not teaching them to cook like a pro.
I know the accent of the Australian is very different. But when I watch those kids on Junior MasterChef, I found their accent is not as strong and different from the US accent. Don't know why.

  17. June,

I'm guessing our cooking classes in America are like the ones in Hong Kong. At least the ones I've seen.

I'm guessing there might be advanced classes in Australia? Or maybe some of these kids have natural talent and they take what they learn in a class and expand it.

It's so interesting about the accents. Do you mean all Australian accents or just the kids on Junior Masterchef?

  18. Dina,

I mean the kids on Junior Masterchef. I can't tell their accent is that much different from the US accent. Of course English is not my mother language so I may be wrong. I remember I read a joke about the Australian accent. The doctor said to a patient,'take a pill today' But it sounds like 'take a pill to die'

  19. June,

    That's a funny joke.

I'm always very impressed by people who are not Native English speakers; yet they write as well as me.

As for Aussie accents. Some are very obvious to me. Other times I can't tell between British and Australian.
