Sydney Opera House

I'm still looking at Sydney Flickr photos.

There's a lot of unique perspectives of the Opera House...different angles, and all that.

Here's one I really love.  It was taken by Roving I.

I love the Opera House.

I love the ship.

I love the water.

I love the houses.

And I really love Sydney.

  1. Seriously, Dina, I worry that you are so smitten with the Oprah house.

    It's cute but it's a thing.

Now Melbourne on the other hand has... well...
    Oh, y'know.
Character! Yes, that's the word I was looking for. Not just a big pile of tall buildings hugging harbour hills like you can see anywhere, there's something genteel and relaxing about Port Phillip Bay.

    But, to each their own.

  2. Fruitcake,

    Yes. I love Sydney.

I think there's also a tiny mean part of me that likes annoying Melbournites with my excessive Sydney love.

I think I should buy an I LOVE SYDNEY shirt in Sydney and then wear it everyday in Melbourne.

  3. You know you are an Australian when...
you understand Sydney's long standing inferiority complex about Melbourne.

Can't WAIT to see the shirt. Bring it on, sista, bring it on.

  4. Hi Dina

I'm guessing Fruitcake can't mean what she writes as she must know the inferiority-superiority complex (no longer technically used except in Freudian circles but a useful lay concept nevertheless)goes both ways.

Meanwhile, nothing beats SA - the Australian originator of the 'pie floater' (the recently mentioned pie faced down in a bowl of pea soup with added 'dead horse') now copied in Sydney.

  5. Fruitcake and Martin:

I wonder who has more of this inferiority complex.

I encounter it more from Melbourne folks, but it might be because I've been to only Sydney.

I get a lot of "You have to come to Melbourne." "When are you going to come to Melbourne?" "There's so much to love in Melbourne."

I've started to suspect that Victorians all work for the Victorian tourist council.

But maybe if I had been to Melbourne and not Sydney; I'd be getting such pressure from Sydney folks.

Martin, I didn't know you had such love for South Australia. That's what you mean by SA, I assume???

Pie floaters sound really good to me. I wonder if any place has a vegetarian version.

Or I suppose we could make it ourselves.....

  6. Hi again

Yes, that's what I meant by SA. I spent the first 30 odd years of my life there so I have an affinity. SA is cool but many S Australians also feel inferior to the Eastern Staters (which they sometimes mask by proclamations of superiority - e.g. claiming, dubiously, the pie floater or, correctly, that SA is the only state that didn't receive any transports of convicts or that they have better football teams, etc.)

As for making the vegetarian pie floater yourself, yes, get a veggie pie and vegetarian pea soup. The regular pie floaters are quite tasty so I'm sure if you prefer vegetarian pies and pea soup the veggie pie floater would also be tasty. Have you ever heard of anything like this being sold in the US? I actually belong to the SA family (the Cowleys) that originated the idea at their pie stands in Adelaide possibly around about the time of the Great Depression. There's actually a Wikipedia entry with details of the Australian history and other condiments used in the pie floater (such as malt vineger, whatever that is):

  7. Martin,

That's exciting about your family history. Now if I ever eat one of these pie-floaters, I'll definitely think of you.

Speaking of...yesterday we were at the new neighborhood grocery store. I saw a can of vegan split pea soup and put it into the basket.

Tim sometimes makes vegetarian pies. Next time he does, I'll float it in some soup.

I don't think I knew about your South Australian heritage. Or maybe I did, and forgot?

I always associate you with Sydney.

I'm going to read the wiki article now.

    Thanks for the link.

  8. I just booked tickets for a weekend in Sydney and I am looking forward to my trip there, it's a nice city but it certainly lacks the appeal of mighty Melbourne!! I can't believe you've never been!!

    1. Well, hopefully I'll get there someday. Then I can compare for myself!

Why do you like Melbourne better?

I hope you enjoy your weekend in Sydney.
