Home and Away and Neighbours has exposed me to language I've not heard before.
I'm wondering what phrases, I'm hearing, are still used in Australia and which were 1980's lingo that's not used anymore.
Here's the list on the top of my head.
1. Give them (her/him) the flick= dumping someone or firing them.
2. Shoot through=Leaving town—maybe more in the concept of running away.
3. Give it a miss= I guess it's saying no to something.
4. A Rage=I'm not sure. I think it's a party—probably one that involves drinking. I don't think anyone would say, Let's go to the birthday rage.
There's probably more that I'm forgetting.
I might post them later.

ReplyDelete1, 2 and 3 are still said.... number 4 was phased out in the 90s!
1. Dumping someone. Mostly used by middle aged (and older) Australians.
2. Shoot through is like... bailing on something. Like he shot through before we paid for dinner...
3. Give it a miss... another way of bailing. Kind of like 'no worries', an easy going way of getting out of a commitment haha

You know, I think I heard one of these phrases recently on Coronation Street (A UK show). But now I forget which one it was. The Coronation Street episodes were from 2013. I don't think I've heard any of the sayings on any recent Australian show I've seen. So it made me wonder if it's less said in Australia now, but still used in the UK.
