Myths and Stereotypes

Oy!

Three posts in one day.  I feel like I'm spamming. I apologize if someone has me on a feed, and I'm bombarding them with my crap.

But then it kind of balances itself out. At times, I'll go a week without posting...and sometimes much longer.

Anyway, this post will be short.

I just wanted to share this link to a very funny FunTrivia quiz I just took. It's about the things us foreigners imagine about Australians.  Of course, I don't believe them anymore. And I think on an intellectual level, even in my ignorant days, I would have known most were silly stereotypes.  But I think a part of me might have imagined them happening.

It's like I know people in the Netherlands don't all walk around wearing wooden shoes.  But if you ask me to close my eyes and picture The Netherlands, I might picture a blond girl in braids wearing her wooden shoes.

As someone from Texas, I feel compelled to ask this, do you have stereotypes about about us that you know are probably not true, yet you imagine them anyway?  For example, you probably know we don't all wear cowboy hats all the time.  But if I asked you to imagine me going to the grocery store, would you imagine a shop full of people wearing their cowboy hats, big belts, and boots?

  1. I think there might be some areas in Texas where grocery store customers might look like as you describe.

  2. Andrew,

Maybe. Probably. Perhaps in more rural areas?

And I imagine in more rural areas of Australia, you might be more likely to hear someone say G'day Mate. Or has that completely disappeared?

We did hear "g'day" when we were away from the city...more than we heard it IN the city. But I'm pretty sure we never heard "g'day mate".

  3. Gidday Dina,

I saw you on Tv the other day and took note of your blog so that i could check it out. Like you are obsessed with everything Aussie, i am the same about the states. I live in a rather small suburb of Geelong called Leopold. Its a lovely spot with views over Geelong from my backyard. Today is freezing cold and windy but we just put another jumper on and live with it. I like reading your views on our country and will check in when i can. Thanks heaps

  4. Hi Donna!

I'm looking at Leopold on Google Maps. It looks nice. I mean not that I can see it. Maybe I should do street view and look around. But it's near the water and that's cool. Would you say it's on a peninsula? I think it is, but I'm not sure.

I hope you manage to stay warm! I'm looking at Melbourne weather and tomorrow looks like it will be a bit warmer. Though you're more south, so you'll probably be colder than Melbourne. Holy crap. I sound like my dad. He likes to provide other people with their weather reports.

It's funny. I've heard from a few Australians who are obsessed with the US. We should form a club made up of Americans obsessed with Australia and Australians obsessed with the US.

Thanks for checking out my blog!
