Let me say I still support Julian Assange, and WikiLeaks. I'm still disgusted with members of the government and the media for speaking for violently against him. I'm also appalled by the unfair and hypocritical actions taken by Mastercard, Visa, and Paypal.
I'm glad to see that Assange is getting out of jail today. I don't think he's a traitor or a rapist. I don't think he belongs in prison.
But WikiLeaks did do something recently to make me want to cringe, roll my eyes, etc.
On Facebook, someone from WikiLeaks posted an update complaining that Mark Zuckerberg is person of the year instead of Assange. What the hell?
Who cares???!!!
This is not an episode of American Idol....or Australian Idol.
Assange got more votes from readers than Zuckerberg. Yeah. Okay. But Time itself says that they weren't going to make the choice using the votes. They just wanted to hear people's opinions...for the fun of it.
There's a lot of people who got more votes than Zuckerberg: Lady Gaga, Stephen Colbert, John Stewart, Obama, Steve Jobs, Obama, Chilean miners, etc.
Time picks one person who THEY feel is the person of the year. It's their opinion. It's not gospel. And it really doesn't matter all that much.
One person doesn't make a year.
Anyway, I don't know who does WiliLeaks' Facebook updates. Hopefully, by now the realize they said something silly, and they're properly embarrassed.
I like some of the comments that people have written in response. Joe Stanford says, I'm totally behind what assange and wikileaks are doing, and I think it's had a huge impact on the world, but I also think Time is right to name zuckerberg person of the year - I would have been disappointed if they'd been swayed just because of an online poll, and for most people's day to day life, Zuckerberg has had a bigger impact this year. chill out and give it another year and see what happens.
